Wernicke’s area receives information from the auditory cortex, and functions to assign word meanings. This is why damage to this area results in meaningless speech, often with paraphasic errors and newly created words or expressions. Paraphasia can involve substituting one word for another, known as semantic paraphasia, or substituting one sound or syllable for another, defined as phonemic paraphasia. This speech is often referred to as “word salad,” as speech sounds fluent but does not have sensible meaning. Normal sentence structure and prosody are preserved, with normal intonation, inflection, rate, and rhythm. This differs from Broca’s aphasia, which is characterized by nonfluency.

Talking about expressiveness, some character designs—like the ‘R,’ ‘Q,’ ‘t,’ ‘r,’ or the italic ‘k’ — indisputably depart from your average serif text face, but that’s precisely the setting in which the magic happens. Italic styles naturally bring in more pen-writing energy, and this is a trait in which Nyck’s personality certainly shines through — an overall classy feel constructed through a contemporary lens.
The type family is structured around four weights with their corresponding italics, and all of them come in three different size-specific options — S, M, and L. The size labeling intuitively describes how the fonts are going to be used, and, accordingly, shows up with different contrast and spacing variations. Nyck L features a maximum contrast with hairline strokes and tight spacing, Nyck M is the core of the family bearing a versatile use in mind, while Nyck S is engineered to execute marvelously in small sizes with little contrast and a more generous spacing. But honestly, nobody is discouraging you from scaling them up should you seek further roughness. We just don’t suggest downscaling the L variety too much, though. 🤷♂️ Nyck boasts 24 styles altogether, all of which should address the most demanding scenarios in your text setting.
Nyck’s roots are intertwined with a diverse range of historic typographic references, from the expressive work of Josef Týfa, William Addison Dwiggins and JvK all the way to the meticulous and precise letters of Jakob Erbar. Certain distinct shapes even stem from vernacular typographic finds that caught our eye during its creation process.
For the rather curious designers, there are many extras lurking beneath the apparent surface of the character set, including various ligatures, arrows, manicules, brackets, oversized quotes, and numerous other perks. Considering its diversity, we imagined Nyck being used in magazines, books, and websites with text-heavy content, as well as forward-thinking branding projects.
